Two numbers, two different jobs
Word count tells you how long the video will run. Character count tells you what the narration will cost, because every text-to-speech provider bills per character. If you are writing for an AI voice, keep an eye on both — a wordy sentence is a slower video and a larger bill at the same time.
Watch the longest sentence
The longest-sentence figure is the most useful number here for a script. Synthetic voices handle short sentences well and long ones badly: they run out of breath, put the emphasis in odd places, and lose the listener. Anything over about thirty words is worth splitting in two.
Nothing is stored
Counting happens in your browser as you type. The text is never transmitted and nothing survives closing the tab, so unreleased scripts are safe to paste here.
Common questions
How is speaking time different from reading time?
Reading silently runs around 240 words a minute; speaking aloud runs around 150. For a video script the speaking figure is the one that matters — reading time is only useful for descriptions and articles.
What counts as a word?
Any run of characters separated by whitespace. Hyphenated words count as one, and numbers count as words, which matches how every writing tool does it.
Why does character count matter?
Because text-to-speech is billed per character, not per word. If you are generating narration, the character count is the number that predicts your bill.
Is my text stored?
No. It is counted in your browser as you type and never sent anywhere. Nothing is saved when you close the tab.
