A thumbnail is never seen the way you make it. You judge it at full size on a large screen; a viewer meets it a few hundred pixels wide, on a phone, in a row of competitors, for about a second. Most thumbnails that fail do not fail because they are badly designed — they fail because they were only ever checked at the wrong size.
The other half is that a thumbnail and a title are read together, not separately. A thumbnail that repeats what the title already says wastes half the space you have.
Worth checking
- Look at it small, in a feed, next to other videos — not full-screen on its own.
- Read the title and the thumbnail together. If they say the same thing, change one.
- Crop deliberately. Automatic resizing tends to cut exactly what you meant to show.
Guides for this
- Stock footage licensing for a monetized channel What a licence has to permit before you put a clip in a monetized video, the four terms that decide it, and the record that turns a claim into a five-minute problem.
- Why a new faceless channel gets no views The four reasons a channel sits at double-digit views, in the order they are worth checking, and why the most common advice — post more — usually makes the problem harder to diagnose.
- Thumbnails and titles that survive the feed Your thumbnail is judged at about a fifth of the size you designed it, and your title is cut at four different lengths. What to do about both, and the pairing rule that matters more than either.
